The CD “The Great Noon” by Banksia Trio, released on Tsgw, presents eleven carefully arranged tracks that document the quartet in its current stage of development. The release brings together originals that have been in the set for a long time as well as newly created pieces from the studio sessions, offering a broad insight into the band’s compositional range. The recording continues the approach of the previous albums and transfers the high-energy live impulses to the medium with precision.
Banksia Trio performs as a piano trio featuring Takashi Sugawa on bass, Masaki Hayashi on piano, and Shun Ishiwaka on drums; this lineup shapes the characteristic sound through finely tuned interaction. Style-wise, the trio moves between carefully conceived composition and improvisational freedom: lyrical piano lines encounter driving bass figures and dynamically articulated drum patterns. The arrangements range from spacious, meditative sections to impulsive, forward-pressing passages, with rhythmic tensions and melodic openness equally in focus.
A key feature of this production is the hybrid recording technique: analog 16-track tape recordings were combined with contemporary digital mixing to unite warmth and detailed resolution. The title “The Great Noon” refers to the philosophical motif of the great noon and is understood as a programmatic framework that underscores the trio’s self-conception and concentrated expressiveness.
